OBSAI First Version of Open Base Station Specifications Now Available on Website
-/4 Feb, 2005 - Wi-Fi Technology News/-OBSAI (Open Base Station Architecture Initiative) has now made available, to non-members of OBSAI, the 1st versions of its open base station interface specification documents related to the interfaces between the Transport, Control, Base Band Processing and Radio functional modules.
These specifications were first completed and made available to members of OBSAI in 2003 together with a detailed systems reference document. Now any interested party who wishes to view these specifications may do so directly from the OBSAI web site. The OBSAI base station interface specifications are compatible with GSM; GSM/EDGE, WCDMA and CDMA and are constantly being reviewed in respect of newer air interfaces in the industry.
Comments John Csapo, OBSAI Management Board and Senior Vice President of Samsung "Over the past couple of years, OBSAI has achieved its main goal of identifying which key areas of the base station interfaces could be made open, producing a concrete set of robust open interface specifications as well as functional module specifications related to these areas and making them available to members to utilize. 115 companies have now joined OBSAI, which means that most companies who wish to be actively involved have been able to contribute significantly to the specifications. '
Open base station architecture will allow manufacturers to focus their research and development efforts on their core competencies and to buy selected base station modules from each other and from other specialist module vendors. This will lead to faster development of innovative and more cost-effective base stations, enabling earlier and lower-cost introduction of new technologies and services to operators
Companies wishing to view the specifications simply visit http://www.obsai.org and on acceptance of OBSAI terms and conditions, may immediately download the first version OBSAI interface specifications documents.
