Intel, Wi-Fi and Indian software companies - Good Combination

Intel plans $41m investment in India centre

"Environment (Wi-Fi) is the single-biggest opportunity for Indian software companies as it offers a whole new set of opportunities for writing applications.'' Read on...

"Intel is putting its resources where its revenues are,'' says its President and CFO, Paul Otellini, indicating that India is a potentially large market for the company.

India was firmly on Intel's market map, as is the entire Asia-Pacific region, which showed extraordinary growth and contributed significantly to the company's revenues, Otellini said. "I see that trend continuing,'' he said. "Non-American markets contribute more to Intel's revenues than the North American markets,'' he said.

Intel also announced $41-million investment in its Intel India Development Centre.

"India is predominantly for software development, but we have also started chip design from the Intel India Development Centre'', Otellini said.

Over 30 per cent of the company's revenues are from the Asia-Pacific region, excluding Japan.

Continuing his push for the adoption of Wi-Fi, Otellini said the "environment (Wi-Fi) is the single-biggest opportunity for Indian software companies as it offers a whole new set of opportunities for writing applications,'' he said, adding that as an environment, Wi-Fi changed the way how, where, why and when computing was done.

"Deploying it is the cheapest way of bringing broadband to a large segment of users ? certainly cheaper than digging up roads and drawing cable,'' he said.

Intel is focussed on market-based product development and the Centrino Mobile Technology has been the fastest ramping product for the company.

According to Ketan Sampat, President, Intel Technology India, the India development centre will provide hardware and software design, validations, system engineering and development for next generation microprocessors, semiconductors and memory technologies.

The new facility is to house more than a 1,000 engineers initially.

Last year, it was announced that Intel would invest $130 million over the next few years, as well as triple the head-count to 3,000.

A design team was recently set up at the Bangalore development centre to work on the 32-bit Intel architecture microprocessor design and development; Intel Centrino Mobile Technology has been established at a centre in Bangalore.

Core product designs for the new Intel Xeon processors in India had begun and Asia's first design team was focussing on the enhancement and development of the next generation of products, Sampat said.
