BT Announces New Network Control Centre (NCC) in Amsterdam

-/3 March, 2005 - Wi-Fi Technology News/-BT announced the opening of a new Network Control Centre (NCC) in Amsterdam, responsible for monitoring BT?s global data network. The Amsterdam network centre will focus on the services layer of the network while the transport layer is managed by the Diegem (Belgium) NCC, opened two years ago.

The new NCC will facilitate improved fault management and better customer information, providing a single centralised point of contact to international companies for all their network service issues. The Diegem and Amsterdam NCCs will serve as backup to each other in case complications are encountered at either facility. A third centre provides backup to both NCCs in cases of serious breakdown that continue for more than six hours.

Andy Green, CEO BT Global Services, said: ?BT has chosen Amsterdam for the new control centre because of its central position, the right education level, and the multinational character of the city. We are proud to employ specialists of twelve different nationalities in Diegem and Amsterdam to provide around the clock service.?

Technical adjustments to the network, such as the maintenance of the fibre-optic infrastructure, will be coordinated from the NCC, avoiding potential network failure due to the rerouting of traffic.

BT uses a single management system for the infrastructure, operational in more than 150 countries. The centralised management software detects and reports disturbances as soon as they occur. The system can establish a connection between apparently separate events and diagnose issues. Two thirds of all problems can be solved without a technician and prior to the customer noticing that an event has transpired in the network.

If the system cannot solve the problem itself, a specialist from the NCC intervenes and directly solves the problem from a remote location or, if necessary, on site. Contact with the customer is organised through the regional customer service centers around the globe.
