3Com's TippingPoint To deliver Networking Solutions To 58 Korean Colleges

3Com's TippingPoint To deliver Networking Solutions To 58 Korean Colleges

TippingPoint Division's Intrusion Prevention Systems Secure Campus-Wide Network for Existing 3Com Customer

MARLBOROUGH, Mass., -/04 April, 2005 - Wi-Fi Technology News/- 3Com Corporation announced that Jeonju University in Jeonju, Korea has selected TippingPoint, a division of 3Com, to deliver secure networking solutions for its 58 colleges, graduate schools, institutes and laboratories. The university is one example of the interest-level and momentum gained as 3Com customers see TippingPoint's benefits first-hand.

The 3Com secure networking solution enables Jeonju University to strengthen security for its wired and wireless networking environment so that its 14,000 students on campus can safely access the network with laptop computers and other connected devices. Jeonju University is using seven TippingPoint Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS) to manage the university's network and protect it from internal and external threats such as worms, viruses, Trojans and Denial of Service attacks. It is the first time Jeonju University has deployed a security solution internally campus-wide. The university is also using nine 3Com? SuperStack? 3 switches to manage traffic at its residence halls.

Gun-joon Hwang, head of the Information and Communication Support Center at Jeonju University, said, "We are extremely pleased with 3Com's network security solutions. We are using 3Com's products for secure access to external networks and to protect the external and the internal network from exploits and attacks. The TippingPoint Intrusion Prevention System provides comprehensive, accurate security and keeps the internal networking traffic speed from decreasing while it protects the whole network system."

Most universities, like Jeonju, typically have open network architectures. As a result, they are often more vulnerable to malicious traffic and bandwidth hijacking. The best-of-breed TippingPoint Intrusion Prevention System thoroughly inspects packets to allow legitimate traffic to continue through the network while stopping malicious content and maintaining high network performance.

Intrusion Prevention Systems go beyond the capabilities of other security solutions to block today's most sophisticated threats that bypass traditional security tools such as firewalls, anti-virus and intrusion detection systems. TippingPoint's IPS is also able to throttle traffic according to policy to reclaim bandwidth from applications such as Peer-to-Peer and Instant Messaging.

"Jeonju University is a prime example of the growing trend of organizations choosing multiple 3Com products for a complete networking and security solution," said TippingPoint division president Kip McClanahan. "This customer confirms the synergies and benefits we identified when we chose to bring our companies together, and is evidence that TippingPoint and 3Com's collaborative efforts are proving successful in the field. We believe 3Com's existing customer base and prospects will benefit from our best-of-breed security solutions, and the momentum will continue."

By winning this project, 3Com demonstrated the excellence of its solutions over competing vendors and its unique ability to provide an end-to-end secure networking solution. This sale is evidence that TippingPoint and 3Com's collaborative efforts are proving successful in the field. Marking the convergence of networking and security, the TippingPoint Intrusion Prevention System is an in-line, network security device that is regularly updated through the Digital Vaccine service with preemptive protection against the latest threats and vulnerabilities. TippingPoint's IPS inspects traffic through Layer 7 to precisely block malicious traffic.
