Cisco Systems unveils a single-box solution for cable operators

Cisco Introduces Integrated Business Services Solution for Cable Operators

DENVER, SCTE Cable-Tec Expo 2006, Booth No. 1045 -/June 22, 2006 - Wi-Fi Technology News/- Cisco Systems® today unveiled a single-box solution for cable operators or multiple service operators (MSOs) selling services to small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) and enterprises with branch operations. The technology was introduced at the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers' annual Cable-Tec Expo

The Cisco® Integrated Business Service solution consists of a Cisco 815 Cable Integrated Services Router (ISR) and Cisco High-Speed WAN Interface Cards (HWIC-CABLE-D-2 and HWIC-CABLE-E/J-2). This innovative solution takes advantage of Cisco's industry-leading portfolio of 3800, 2800, 1800 and 800 series of ISRs and provides cable operators with a suite of nine Cisco ISRs, all offering consistent instrumentation and management that can be scaled to provide a full suite of high-value, high-margin managed services.

With the new Cisco integrated solution, MSOs will no longer need to provide two customer premise devices - a cable modem and a router - in order to deploy business services. Cable operators can now deploy a single, compact device that includes the broad Cisco IOS® feature set and provides the high level of performance and manageability that MSOs and their business customers require.

"Business services such as secure connectivity, Internet Protocol-based voice and video communications and wireless and wired local area network services, to name a few, represent a tremendous growth opportunity for cable operators around the world," said Teresa Mastrangelo, principal analyst of Broadbandtrends. "We see a tremendous upside for MSOs and their business customers who take advantage of Cisco's new cable ISR and WAN interface card solution all consolidated into a single-box."

The Cisco 815 Cable ISR and Cisco HWIC CABLE-D-2 are designed to comply with the Cable Television Laboratories (CableLabs®) Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS) 2.0. The HWIC-CABLE-E/J-2 is designed to comply with the Euro-DOCSIS and J-DOCSIS specifications.

The Cisco 815 Cable ISR is a fixed-configuration router with a single F connector for DOCSIS connectivity, four 10/100 Ethernet ports, and industry-leading security and routing capabilities. The advanced security features of the Cisco 815 ISR include capabilities such as hardware-based virtual private network (VPN) acceleration, firewall and intrusion prevention.

For cable operators needing higher performance, voice and other advanced service capabilities, redundancy, or additional flexibility, the Cisco HWIC for cable are optional cards providing hybrid fiber-coaxial (HFC) connectivity for Cisco's leading modular ISRs and IAD2430 Series. The new Cisco HWIC for cable can be used together with Cisco modular ISRs to provide a full slate of "quad play" services of voice, data, video and mobility.

With the Cisco 815 Cable ISR and Cisco HWIC for cable, MSOs' business customers now have a complete family of business-class customer premise router options. For the first time, MSOs, SMBs and enterprises can have security, switching, content caching, wireless, voice gateway, call processing, voice mail, automated attendant, conferencing and transcoding capabilities - along with full connectivity to the hybrid-fiber-coaxial (HFC) cable network - all integrated in a single device.

Product Availability and Pricing
The Cisco Integrated Business Services solution for cable operators will be made available in August 2006 and will vary in pricing based on configurations customized to meet specific needs of cable operators' networks.
