Wi-Fi Alliance Awards 54g(TM) Product the Right to Bear Interoperability Logo, Selects Broadcom Solutions for 802.11g Test Bed

IRVINE, Calif., July 8 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Broadcom Corporation (NASDAQ:BRCM) , the leading provider of silicon solutions enabling broadband communications, today announced that its 54g(TM) access point reference design is among the first products to achieve Wi-Fi(R) certification for 802.11g.
Wi-Fi certification indicates that Broadcom's 54g(TM) access point reference design (the Broadcom(R) BCM94306-GAP) has been proven to work seamlessly with all other Wi-Fi CERTIFIED(TM) 802.11g and Wi-Fi CERTIFIED 802.11b products. A Broadcom-based client solution from Buffalo Technologies has also been selected for the 802.11g test bed, underscoring the technical excellence of Broadcom's 54g(TM) technology.

Wi-Fi certification is provided through testing managed by the Wi-Fi Alliance, a non-profit organization formed in 1999 to certify interoperability of IEEE 802.11 products. The Alliance is now certifying products for the recently-ratified 802.11g wireless LAN standard, which extends the data rate of the popular 802.11b standard from 11 Mbps to 54 Mbps and maintains backward compatibility with the 40 million 802.11b devices on the market. 54g(TM) has emerged as the premier 802.11g-compliant technology, delivering maximum performance and now providing the interoperability that Wi-Fi customers demand.

"Now that 802.11g is an official IEEE standard and the Wi-Fi Alliance has begun its certification for guaranteed interoperability, wireless customers can confidently adopt 802.11g products," said Joseph Byrne, Principal Analyst at Gartner. "This is especially important for businesses deploying wireless equipment from various manufacturers, since products certified for 802.11g are guaranteed to be interoperable with all other Wi-Fi certified 802.11g and 802.11b equipment."

Broadcom was the first vendor to ship 802.11g solutions, and has since attained significant success with its 54g(TM) products. According to leading market information company The NPD Group, Inc., 54g(TM)-based products from Apple, Belkin, Buffalo/MELCO and Linksys currently represent more than 90 percent of all 802.11g equipment sold through U.S. retail distribution channels. Broadcom's 54g(TM) technology is also included in all 802.11g-enabled notebooks sold to date by leading PC manufacturers such as Apple, Dell, Fujitsu, Gateway and HP/Compaq.

"As 802.11g replaces 802.11b as the mainstream wireless LAN standard, the Wi-Fi seal of approval is the final vote of confidence for customers considering 'g' equipment," said Jeff Thermond, Vice President and General Manager of Broadcom's Home and Wireless Networking Business Unit. "By working closely with the Wi-Fi Alliance to establish the 802.11g test bed, Broadcom has become one of the first Wi-Fi certified 802.11g vendors, giving our equipment partners a head-start in building 54g(TM) systems that meet stringent interoperability requirements."

Broadcom has provided its partners with updated software for its access point and client reference designs so that they may seek 802.11g Wi-Fi certification. All 54g(TM) products sold to date can be upgraded to 802.11g standard compliance with a simple software upgrade. Current 54g(TM) customers should consult with their equipment manufacturer for details on how to obtain these software upgrades.

54g(TM) Value Proposition

54g(TM) is the industry's premier 802.11g solution for wireless LANs in homes, offices and public hot-spots. Products based on 54g(TM) technology are maximum performance, providing the highest throughput and range. Broadcom recently enhanced its OneDriver(TM) software with Xpress(TM) technology, which improves the efficiency of data traveling over a wireless network to increase overall throughput. Broadcom's AirForce(TM) Wireless LAN Product Family

Broadcom's high performance WLAN product line, AirForce, features the greatest breadth and depth in the industry. In addition to transceivers that provide IEEE 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11a and dual-band 802.11a/g solutions, Broadcom integrates wireless network processors, communications technologies and OneDriver software solutions into reference designs that speed customer time to market. Broadcom partners are developing 54g(TM) client solutions, access points, routers, cable modems, DSL modems, Bluetooth(TM) solutions and GPRS cellular products.

All wireless chipsets in the AirForce product line enjoy unique performance advantages that improve throughput and range via Broadcom's SmartRadio(TM) technology. In addition to advanced signal processing techniques, the all-CMOS solutions are capable of self-calibrating based on usage temperature and other environmental conditions, reconfiguring constantly for optimum performance. Competing radios are statically calibrated at the point of manufacture and are unable to adapt to changing environmental influences.
