Sarantel wins UK's most prestigious electronics award for product development
Sussex UK, 11 July 2003
Sarantel has won one of the UK's most prestigious electronics industry awards, the Electronics Industry Design Award for Design to Manufacture. The company was voted the best example of design and manufacturing staff working together, in this case on the development of its range of PowerHelix antennas. At a ceremony held last night at the Copthorne Hotel in Sussex, UK, Steve Brown, of sponsor Cookson Electronics, presented the award to Sarantel CEO Barrie Foley before an audience of 200 electronics industry leaders.
The EID Awards represent the interests of the entire UK electronics market. Their aim is to formally recognise professional excellence, acknowledge the achievements of leading companies and individuals and to emphasise innovation, efficiency and best practice. The EID Awards are the ultimate industry accolade - design engineers voting for design engineering excellence.
Over the past two years Sarantel, in association with Loughborough University, has developed a fully automated production line using the latest robotic techniques for its helical ceramic antennas. The tiny devices are used in GPS receivers but will soon find wide application in 3G and WiFi handsets. Each antenna is individually laser trimmed to the user specification during the manufacturing process.
The other finalists in the Design to Manufacture category were Rate Gyro by Raymarine, CEFL PIR by Danlers and Zirkon & Stannah Stairlifts by Zirkon.
The event was organised by IML, publishers of Electronic Product Design and Electronics Manufacture and Test magazines, together with the Electronics Design Programme which is supported by the UK Government's Department of Trade and Industry. The award website is http://www.eidawardsonthenet.net
