Sybase Joins Wi-Fi Alliance to Promote Wider Availability of Wireless Technology

Membership in Wi-Fi Testing Organization Demonstrates Leadership and Commitment to the Market

SYBASE TECHWAVE USER CONFERENCE, ORLANDO, Fla. ? August 4, 2003 ? Further demonstrating its commitment to the fast-growing Wi-Fi market, Sybase, Inc. (NYSE: SY), today announced that it has joined the Wi-Fi Alliance, a non-profit organization formed to consolidate wireless LAN standards. By joining the Alliance, Sybase?the leading provider of software for the unwired enterprise?deepens its involvement in the Wi-Fi market and takes an active role in the establishment of industry-wide standards and product interoperability. As one of the first enterprise software providers to join the Alliance, Sybase?s membership highlights the importance of software as well as hardware in enabling successful Wi-Fi solutions.

?Most people think hardware when they hear Wi-Fi, but innovative infrastructure and application software are equally important to making Wi-Fi work for the enterprise,? said Marty Beard, senior vice president of Corporate Development and Marketing at Sybase. ?Enterprise applications that are not designed for challenges such as intermittent network access, limited device battery power and frequent security issues will not be successful ? no matter how sophisticated the hardware. Based on our leadership in mobile database and middleware technology, Sybase plans to collaborate with other members of the Wi-Fi Alliance to help solve the challenges that are inherent in Wi-Fi networks.?

?In becoming a member of the Wi-Fi Alliance, Sybase joins a growing list of companies representing a broad range of industries from around the world that are committed to delivering software and hardware products that support Wi-Fi certified products,? said Frank Hanzlik, Wi-Fi Alliance?s managing director. ?Wi-Fi certification allows products to be deployed more rapidly, used in many different venues, and support the growth of several new industry segments.?

With its iAnywhere Solutions subsidiary and recent acquisition of AvantGo, Sybase is the recognized leader in the mobile database and mobile middleware markets and offers the world?s largest mobile Internet service. iAnywhere Solutions? ?always available? architecture ensures that business-critical information can be accessed regardless of network availability. Once the mobile worker re-enters a coverage area such as a wireless LAN or hot spot, updates can be synchronized with the back-end systems.
