Round Rock, Texas, USA - The U.S. Military Academy at West Point is installing a wireless network across its campus and equipping its entire cadet class of 2007 with new Dell notebooks.
Nearly 1,400 new cadets will tap into the new wireless network in classrooms and campus common areas using Dell Latitude D800 notebooks.
"The notebooks had the lowest out-of-the-box failure rate in our 19 years of issuing computers to cadets," said Col. Don Welch, associate dean for Information and Educational Technology at West Point.
This is the third consecutive year that West Point has selected Dell to equip its cadets. These systems add to the Dell PowerEdge servers and Dell/EMC storage area network (SAN) the academy deployed last year as it digitized portions of the cadet library, including annual yearbooks, Civil War maps, cadet records from famous graduates and personal correspondence of significant historical figures.
The notebooks include integrated wireless cards, Pentium M processors, 512 MB of memory, 60-gigabyte hard drives, port replicators and removable 24-speed combination DVD and CD read-writeable drives. Each system has a four-year warranty to coincide with the cadet's education schedule.
Technology is an important part of West Point's academic courses. West Point was among the first educational institutions to wire virtually each living space and classroom with a computer network. The curriculum has included Internet access since 1987.
"Our military customers need flexible, reliable systems to access critical information, whether they're in the field or in the classroom. That's why Dell is committed to providing them with the latest industry-standard technology," Tom Buchsbaum, vice president, Dell Federal Systems said.
The Dell Latitude D800 notebooks were purchased through the U.S. Army Small Computer Program's ADMC-1 BPA Contract.
