Proxim Raises the Bar for Last Mile Access and High Bandwidth Metropolitan Area Networking
Proxim’s Tsunami MP.11a is the first high-performance multipoint solution operating in the 5.47-5.725 GHz license-free band available for use in Europe.
London, United Kingdom, Sept. 23, 2003 – Proxim Corporation (Nasdaq: PROX), a global leader in wireless networking equipment for Wi-Fi and wireless wide area networking, today announced the new Proxim Tsunami MP.11a, a high performance, affordable and secure outdoor wireless solution for service providers and enterprises that offers 54 Mbps data rates in three separate 5GHz frequency bands for global deployments. It also offers non-line of site capabilities for urban environments with dense populations.

The Tsunami MP.11a offers 54 Mbps data rates with up to 30 Mbps effective bandwidth. It also provides the OFDM modulation, Transmit Power Control and Dynamic Frequency Selection features required for European deployments.
High Performance Features
The Tsunami MP.11a enables channel bonding, to connect channels for greater range. Since it utilises OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) technology, the Tsunami MP.11a enables installation in non-line-of-sight conditions like high-density metropolitan areas.
Like other products in the Tsunami MP.11 family, the Tsunami MP.11a utilises Proxim’s unique Wireless Outdoor Router Protocol (WORP), which provides highly reliable over-the-air connectivity in outdoor environments and offers increased availability, range and performance compared with other solutions. WORP also prevents unauthorised access to the network from Wi-Fi systems. In addition, the Tsunami MP.11a supports Asymmetric Bandwidth Management, which allows adjustments to the send and receive data rates independently. This enables service providers to offer differentiated services and pricing for business and residential customers.
The Tsunami MP.11a solution set includes two subscriber units with customised functionality to address the specific needs and budgets of business and residential customers. The business Subscriber Unit offers support for an unlimited number of local devices and antenna flexibility for maximum performance and range. The Residential Subscriber Unit provides everything needed for a residential deployment, including a customer installable “indoor” window antenna, for maximum convenience, ease of deployment and cost savings. The product family also includes the Tsunami MP.11a Base Station Unit, which can connect up to 100 Subscriber Units of either type. Additionally, Tsunami MP.11a can be used in conjunction with Proxim’s carrier-class Tsunami point-to-point and multipoint products that offer speeds up to 960 Mbps total capacity for large-scale deployments.
Pricing and Availability
Proxim Tsunami MP.11a products will be available in Q4 through Proxim’s international network of resellers.
The Tsunami MP.11a Base Station Unit has a U.S. list price of $1295. The Tsunami MP.11a Subscriber Unit has a U.S. list price of $695 and the Tsunami MP.11a Residential Subscriber Unit has a U.S. list price of $495.
