ip.access and RigNet deliver GSM Abis over IP via satellite

Cannes, France, February 25 /Wi-Fi Technology News/- ip.access ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of TTP Communications Plc (LSE:TTC), announces that RigNet, a leading provider of communications services to offshore oil rigs, land rigs and remote locations, has completed a successful trial of ip.access? nanoGSM solution, culminating in a high quality voice call via a combination of satellite and fibre between Oslo (Norway) to RigNet?s Texas headquarters.

The trial, conducted in conjunction with Oslo-based GSM operator Teletopia, marks the world?s first satellite backhaul implementation of ip.access? unique GSM/IP solution and paves the way for highly cost effective GSM over satellite implementations with only the nanoBTS? and satellite terminal at the remote end.

In the trial, ip.access? nanoGSM? BSC was integrated into the switch at Teletopia?s offices in Oslo. The nanoBTS? picocellular basestation was located at RigNet?s US headquarters in Houston, Texas and was able to function as if it was an extension of Teletopia?s Norwegian network. The success of the trial paves the way for the delivery of GSM services to disparate locations such as oil rigs, refineries and a wide variety of remote locations not currently covered by existing networks.

The addition of the ip.access nanoGSM solution to RigNet?s portfolio of satellite-based communication services will strengthen its current offering to oil rig and remote location customers. The services offered range from a single telephone line and Internet access to a full office infrastructure, supporting a large number of users. Paul Gundersen, CEO of RigNet commented, ?The trial of the ip.access solution satisfied all of our expectations in terms of quality, and reliability.? He added, ?This is a valuable addition to our service offering that will increase global communication capability for our customers.?

Simon Albury, Business Development Director for ip.access, added, ?ip.access is breaking down the last frontiers for mobile communications coverage by enabling a cost-effective, scalable GSM-over-IP communications solution ? regardless of which data transport technology is used.?

ip.access ltd (www.ipaccess.com) designs and manufactures a range of GSM and GPRS infrastructure solutions that integrate seamlessly with IP-based networks providing ubiquitous and cost-effective mobile radio coverage within buildings. ip.access products can be used to enhance public mobile networks and to support emerging enterprise-focused wireless office services.

Based in Cambridge, UK, ip.access ltd is a wholly-owned subsidiary of TTP Communications plc, a world leading independent supplier of cellular handset technology. TTP Communications, through its subsidiary TTPCom (www.ttpcom.com), sells technology intellectual property used in the design and manufacture of wireless communication terminals. Over 80 devices using its GSM technology have achieved Full Type Approval - more than any other independent developer. TTP Communications plc is listed on the London Stock Exchange (LSE: TTC).
