A Circle of Trust Possible? ? Enter Federated Identity Management

-/June 10, 2004 Wi-Fi Technology News/-Currently, the countless amounts of information accessed and shared through countless internet sites and web portals makes security and privacy issues paramount concerns in the wireless and mobile industries.

Not only is there a need to regulate the content of information distributed to the general public, but the desire to properly and securely provide information for organizational reasons give this initiative immense consideration.

Today?s economic environment has created an unprecedented need for businesses and governments to safely share sensitive information amongst different levels and each other. The need for growth has lead to searches for a system that balances safety with accessibility.

Members of society have already been conditioned to use personal identification wherever relevant. So what better, and more efficient, criteria to use than personal identification? Personal identification management would involve the use of electronic personal credentials to confirm one?s identity, to regulate their access to information, and to dictate information usage.

The problem then becomes ? how to effectively control and implement such a practice? For the solution is not as simple as handing out classification cards.

The Federated Identity Management program attempts to solve the balancing problem through the use of an exclusivity scenario. Companies that enable the Federated identity Management program will agree to employ similar identity management processes and collaborate on all aspects of identity administration (rules, regulations, standards, issuing, etc). Once authorized, an individual can then access information from member organizations.

The three main goals for the Federated Identity Management program is to ensure a high level of security and privacy for sensitive information and, at the same time, reducing and simplifying the need for a multiple identification system.

Simon Nicholson, Chairman of Liberty Alliance, will examine how mobile operators, equipment providers, content and service providers as well as vendors and users can use federated identity management at the 2004 Wireless and Mobile WorldExpo (July 21 & 22, Toronto). These standards and established business best practices can be used to take advantage of the growth potential presented by identity-based mobile.
