Saint Francis Medical Center Selects Roving Planet as Provider of Choice for Wireless LAN Security and Management

Westminster, Colorado -/June 17, 2004 Wi-Fi Technology News/-In an effort to ensure the security and performance of its fast-growing WLAN, Saint Francis Medical Center (St. Francis) has selected Roving Planet's software-based Central Site Director(tm) as its platform of choice for wireless LAN security, management and integration.

The hospital-wide WLAN initiative at St. Francis is designed to provide care providers with access to patient medical records at the point-of-care and eventually to support other mobile applications such as computerized physician order entry, e-prescribing and inventory management as well as guest users such as patients, visitors, and contract physicians.

"We have a large, growing WLAN that plays an increasingly critical role in patient care. This ultimately means that we must ensure secure access to patient and medical information and guarantee optimal WLAN performances for our care providers," Said Randy Nale, Manager of IS Technical Services at St. Francis. "After evaluating other solutions, Roving Planet was the only solution that could be deployed without disrupting our existing network while also providing a broad feature set that met our requirements for security, network monitoring, dynamic bandwidth management, and guest access provisioning," added Nale.

Some of St. Francis' key drivers for selecting and deploying Roving Planet include:

v Security. Secure and easy-to-manage authentication - Roving Planet leveraged St Francis' existing Active Directory to authenticate WLAN users via their standard Windows log-in. Deep security audit trails and alerts - Roving Planet detailed tracking of security events and each WLAN user's activity, connection status, and access to various applications, especially applications involving patient medical records which is critical for HIPPA compliance.

v Performance Management. To ensure that care providers can always have an optimal wireless user experience, Roving Planet (i) dynamically manages bandwidth so that all bandwidth is made available to each user and (ii) ensures that each access point dynamically prioritizes care providers and patient/medical related applications over other users and applications.

v Guest Access. Roving Planet (i) provides a variety of mechanisms for provisioning access for guest users, (ii) strictly controls what applications can accessed by guests, and (iii) dynamically regulates the amount of bandwidth available to guests relative to care providers and other hospital staff.

v Ease of Deployment. Roving Planet's OSI Layer 2 architecture and VLAN management features allowed St. Francis to deploy the Central Site Director with no disruption to the existing network IP topology and broadcast traffic, and with a small footprint at the network core.

St. Francis, the largest and most comprehensive healthcare facility in northern Louisiana, worked with system integrator Consolus, Inc. (www.consolus.com) to select and implement the best possible WLAN security and management solution. Consolus, a solutions delivery company focused on emerging technologies for voice and data communications and key business applications, chose Roving Planet over competing solutions and is now a certified Roving Planet Solutions Partner.

"This implementation marks Roving Planet's commitment to providing leadership in wireless network security and management for healthcare institutions and demonstrates how we work with leading wireless solution providers such as Consolus to deliver our platform," said Greg Mesch, CEO of Roving Planet. "With Roving Planet, healthcare institutions can lower their WLAN operating costs while enjoying strong WLAN security at multiple levels and WLAN performance that can dynamically adapt to the changing needs of care providers, healthcare applications and even guest users such as patients and their visitors," added Mesch.
