Local Leaders to Meet In Corpus Christi, Texas for Wi-Fi Summit

Washington, D.C. -/August 05, 2004 - Wi-Fi Technology News/- Public Technology, Inc. (PTI) has announced that it will hold a national summit for local government officials on the topic of Wi-Fi and wireless technologies this fall in Corpus Christi, Texas. During the 2004 Metropolitan Mobile Wi-Fi Summit, October 13-15, 2004 local government technology leaders will meet to collectively develop the strategies and identify the next steps for implementing Wi-Fi networks in their communities.

The location of the summit was selected because Corpus Christi is one of the first cities in the nation to implement a ubiquitous metropolitan mobile Wi-Fi pilot network (20 square miles). The current outcomes of this pilot will be used as a basis for evaluation and roadmap development throughout the summit. The summit meeting will take place at the American Bank Convention Center in Corpus Christi.

Through a series of educational sessions and roundtable workshops the summit will promote awareness of the many policy, management and technical issues of Wi-Fi as well as provide best practice examples of Wi-Fi applications in local government. The agenda has been designed to meet the needs of local government executives, managers and technologists and has been designed around four themes or tracks:
. Public Safety - Mobile Wi-Fi applications present significant opportunities for improving law enforcement, homeland security, and justice system services through video surveillance, information sharing and IP communication applications.
. Public Works/Transportation - Public works Wi-Fi applications include mobile GIS, work management, inspections, asset management, automated meter reading, telemetry and intelligent transportation systems.
. Community Development - Community Wi-Fi applications include mobile case management, K-12 distance learning, environmental monitors and remote health care services.
. Economic Development - Economic development Wi-Fi applications include wireless ISP partnerships, local commerce portals, smart growth opportunities and small business development.
The summit agenda was developed by an Advisory Committee of local government leaders representing the PTI membership. In addition to summit activities, each of the PTI task forces (Transportation, Sustainability, Public Safety, and Telecommunications and Information Technology) will be meeting during the summit.

Thom McCloud, Interim Executive Director of PTI, says the summit was created "in response to the discussion and interest in Wi-Fi networks across all areas of the PTI membership, as well as the interest in Wi-Fi across a wide range of communities - small and large, urban and rural."

Summit registration is free and by invitation only. Additional information and an updated summit agenda will be posted to the PTI web site, http://www.pti.org, and is available by contacting Dale Bowen, dbowen@pti.org, 202-626-2456. Companies in the Wi-Fi and wireless arena interested in becoming a summit sponsor are invited to contact PTI as well.
