Symbol Technologies Launches Professional Services Provider Program

HOLTSVILLE, N.Y.--June 5, 2003--Symbol Technologies, Inc. (NYSE:SBL), a global leader in enterprise mobility solutions, which earlier this year introduced the Symbol PartnerSelect Program, today announced a series of initiatives designed to drive partner sales revenue and increase partner interaction.
The initiatives include the following:
-- The SymbolCertified Professional Services Provider Program that creates a global network of Symbol partners certified to deliver enhanced professional services to Symbol customers.
-- The Symbol Channel Partner Portal, which provides a Web-based Partner Relationship Management (PRM) system designed to maximize partner-selling performance, increase interaction with Symbol and other partners and manage sales leads within a single global portal.
-- Virtual Symbol University for Partners, a new online learning management system that can be used by worldwide partners for product and services education and certification to expand partner sales and technical expertise.
SymbolCertified Professional Services
SymbolCertified Professional Service Provider status is earned by eligible partners through thorough training, testing and a demonstration of services skills and knowledge. Certification is achieved for specific technologies; partners can choose the Symbol technologies in which they want to be certified. Achieving certification gives SymbolCertified professional services providers access to service best practices and enhances their ability to offer, sell and deliver professional services for Symbol-based solutions.
The program has been launched in the United States and Europe and will soon roll out to Latin America and Asia-Pacific.
"Certification in the SymbolCertified program provides business opportunities for our company, as well as assurances to our customers and potential customers that we provide the highest level of expert services. It also serves to solidify a long-term relationship with Symbol," said Jerry Foster, director of business development, Next Level Solutions, a Phoenix-based provider of wireless data infrastructure solutions ranging from in-building wireless LAN to high-bandwidth laser and microwave point-to-point and multipoint links. Next Level is the first of Symbol's business partners to attain certification in the SymbolCertified program.

Through the program, Symbol gains a valuable business partner for delivery of quality professional services and increased customer satisfaction, and global end-user customers gain the benefits of Symbol solutions in a more open marketplace," Todd Abbott, senior vice president of Symbol worldwide sales and marketing, said, adding, "PartnerSelect partners who invest the time, energy and resources to become SymbolCertified expert professional services providers are effectively rewarded with revenue opportunities."
Symbol Invests in PRM
Symbol also announced it is investing more than $10 million in Web-based systems designed to maximize Symbol channel partner selling performance. With Siebel PRM to power the infrastructure and BearingPoint to design and build the system, Symbol is initiating a partner relationship management system that allows partners to manage certifications, develop business and marketing plans, update profiles, interact with Symbol and other partners and manage leads within a single global portal.
The implementation of Siebel PRM is part of Symbol's overall PRM strategy. The strategy includes deploying Solution Builder, which allows direct and distribution partners to design, configure and purchase products in a quick, secure and easy fashion. All channel partners have access to Solution Builder's offline product catalog enabling them to present the most current product information to their customers.
Symbol Partners Receive Online Learning
A new online learning management system to educate and certify partners will let Symbol track and manage the sales and marketing skills of its resellers, distributors and internal sales force to drive product sales and to further improve the expertise of partners' technical and sales force. The virtual Symbol University campus, which is based on the industry-leading Docent Enterprise system, enables Symbol-channel partners to quickly and effectively learn about new products while Symbol evaluates partner development as measured by sales, service and revenue. The program supplements Symbol University, which has a curriculum of more than 250 instructor-led and online learning courses.
