3Way Networks Announces First IN-cTM Technology Product
Cambridge, UK-/19 May, 2005 - Wi-Fi Technology Forum/-UK based 3G technology company 3Way Networks has announced its first product based around its innovative IN-cTM technology. ?Integrated Network on card (IN-cTM) contains an entire UMTS network on a single PCB and enables us to cheaply and quickly develop a wide range of 3G products in significantly less time than our competitors? said Dr Andy Richardson, 3Way Founder and system architect.
?IN-cTM has been designed from the outset to use Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) so it integrates extremely well with the latest version of 3G - Release 5 - and Next Generation Networks such as those being deployed by BT? he added.
The first 3Way product using IN-cTM is the DBX6750, a small and flexible UMTS network device, targeted at; 3G operators, handset vendors and Satellite operators.
The DBX6750 will enable operators and handset vendors to easily demonstrate 3G handset capability in locations where no coverage exists or current coverage is poor. Mobile phone shops find that potential customers are walking away because they cannot show what 3G has to offer, even though the customer might have good coverage in their home or office. ?Our DBX6750 acts as a complete standalone and self contained 3G network that enables handset features to be demonstrated anywhere? said Dr Richardson
The DBX will also be available in a version that will allow operators to provide 3G indoor coverage, with users able to make and receive 3G calls just as they can on the main network. This will be a much more convenient and effective way of using mobile phones in the home or office than having a dual or triple mode handset. ?The DBX has some major security and quality of service features that make it superior to other systems such as voice over WiFi, and using 3G for indoor coverage represents a better business proposition for 3G operators? said 3Way Chairman Dr David Cleevely.
The DBX6750 can also be used by satellite operators to provide 3G coverage much more cheaply. . The internal switching capability of the DBX6750 allows local calls to be handled locally without using the satellite link and the option of an onboard codec allows a dramatic reduction in the bandwidth of any calls carried over the satellite link.
?Our IN-cTM technology is going to be deployed in a wide range of products and will eventually be used as the core technology inside a 3G Home Gateway which will cost less than ?100? said Dr Cleevely. ?This will allow 3G operators to deliver mobile services in your home so you won?t need separate DECT cordless phones any more. 3G is the natural replacement for DECT cordless phones and the 3Way solution will enable the mobile operators to finally take the lions share of the household telecoms spend? he added.
First shipments of the DBX6750 will be made in September this year.
3Way Networks is a privately owned company based in Cambridge UK. The company was founded in 2004 and is focused on delivering a range of 3G solutions using its IN-cTM technology.

1. Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is the IP protocol designed to carry voice calls. 3Way is using SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) a type of VOIP that is becoming widespread. VOIP offers operators significant savings in the cost of transmitting calls from point to point and is becoming widely used in fixed networks. 3G release 5 will start to introduce VOIP into mobile networks.
2. 3G Release 5 is the next iteration of standards defined by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (the international standards group defining the specifications for 3rd Generation Networks). Release 5 introduces enhancements to the current release 99 version of 3G. Among other features Release 5 introduces higher speed data downloads and VOIP.
3. Next Generation Networks is defined as the convergence of the public switched telephone networks with wireless networks and the Internet.
4. Voice over WiFi is a method of carrying voice over wireless local area networks. VoWiFi (or VoWLAN as it is also sometimes called) requires a WLAN compatible handset to work.
5. Home Gateway refers to a device that will be located in the users home and connected to a ADSL or cable network and allow local connection to a 3G handset. The end users 3G handset will communicate directly with the home gateway at low power levels and carry 3G voice and data traffic as well as carrying the usual DSL traffic such as data for the home PC and digital television.
6. DECT refers to Digital Enhanced Cordless Telephony a standard for cordless telephones. The DECT standard was developed in the early 1990s by ETSI the European standards body.
7. Onboard Codec. A codec is a piece of software (and sometimes hardware) that COdes and DECodes voice and video.
