Rockville Launches Free Wireless Wi-Fi Hotspot for the Public

Bring Your Appetite & Your Laptop to Rockville?s Town Center

Rockville, Md. -/October 05, 2005 - Wi-Fi Technology News/- The City of Rockville, at the center of Montgomery County?s I-270 Technology Corridor, is taking one more step toward demonstrating it is a technology-savvy, 21st century community. Today (Wednesday, October 5, 2005 at 11:00), a coalition of public and private partners in Rockville are hosting an ?Unplugging? Ceremony to celebrate going wireless.

?The wireless hotspot is the latest example of why Rockville is a great place to do business,? said Sally Sternbach, executive director of Rockville Economic Development, Inc., or REDI.

?I?m excited about having a wireless hotspot in Town Center because it will complement what we?re creating there ? a great place to live, work and enjoy,? said Mayor Larry Giammo. ?It especially makes sense given some of the elements of our new Town Center, including the new library, new business incubator, and new public spaces that will likely draw large numbers of people who will value wireless internet access.?

REDI, Vornado Realty Trust, RockNet and Applied Wireless LAN, Inc. came together to realize the wireless hotspot by donating the equipment, providing technology support and the space necessary to house the equipment which enables the wireless capabilities. The public and private partners have worked together since May 2005 on the project.

?As a Leadership Montgomery graduate (05'), my long term commitment is to decrease the digital divide among Montgomery County citizens, business, and public safety,? said Jonathan Walker, who is president of Applied Wireless LAN, Inc. and who provided the technical leadership on the project.

The Wi-Fi Hotspot will be accessible indoors and outdoors along ?Regal Row,? which is the cluster of restaurants and retailers surrounding Regal Cinemas in the Rockville Town Center on East Montgomery Avenue from Maryland Avenue to Monroe Street.

?Bring your appetite and your laptop to Regal Row,? said Jason Euler, Potbelly?s manager. ?The wireless access reaches from the Rockville Metro to Tara Asia.?
