iSuppli report names Agere leader in delivering the chips that are the brains of the world's wired communications networks
ALLENTOWN, Pa., -- Agere Systems (NYSE: AGR.A, AGR.B) today announced that electronics market research firm iSuppli has ranked Agere as the number one provider of semiconductors for the equipment that makes up the world's voice and data communications networks.
iSuppli is releasing a report today, titled Networking and Optical Communications 2003 Competitive Analysis?Market Share and Supplier Analysis, that shows Agere held the largest share of the market for semiconductors sold into wired communications applications in 2002.
According to iSuppli's report, Agere also ranked first in the supply of semiconductors to both the SONET/SDH framers and mappers and ATM segments. In these two segments, Agere overwhelmingly leads, with 26.6 percent of SONET/SDH and 30 percent of the ATM segment.
"Agere held on to the number one position in wired communications ICs in what was one of the most difficult market environments the semiconductor industry has ever seen," said Steve Rago, principal analyst of iSuppli's networking and optical practice. "The company's product portfolio positions it well for continued leadership in this market."
Communications Platform Solutions Drive Leadership
Agere leads the wired communications market by engineering ICs and integrating them with supporting software and reference designs into complete platforms.
"We are gaining share with network equipment providers by delivering multiservice solutions that reduce their costs and bring new features to market rapidly," said Sohail Khan, executive vice president of Agere's Infrastructure Systems Group. "Our customers know that with Agere, they not only get leading technology, but also unparalleled support and our long-term commitment to continued innovation in this market."
Agere offers highly integrated devices for several types of ATM-based networks. Agere's ATM solutions include the ATM port controller (APC) that provides complete ATM switching functionality for OC-12 speeds; complete system-on-a-chip (SoC) ATM access solutions for AAL2 and AAL5 (TAAD family) at OC-3 rates and Segmentation and Reassembly (SAR) for AAL5 devices for OC-3 to OC-48 speeds. With this portfolio and considerable ATM software expertise, Agere is strongly positioned to provide next-generation multiservice platform solutions.
SONET/SDH chips include physical media devices, physical layer devices, framers, mappers and overhead processing standard and custom ICs used at OC-3, OC-12, OC-48, OC-192 and OC-768 speeds. Agere's MARS? (multiservice access and rate solutions) family of framers and mappers is part of the company's premier portfolio of bundled line card solutions, based on a common hardware and software platform that allows customers to reduce system development costs and speed time-to-market.
Agere's MARS? solutions target popular applications in the multiservice networking space, such as virtual private networks, 3G wireless and digital subscriber lines. Framer and mapper chips are critical to performing access and transport functions in today's fiber optic networks.
