European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) elects new Director General





Sophia Antipolis-/March 29, 2006 - Wi-Fi Technology News/- The 47th General Assembly of the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) elected its new Director General, who will hold office from July 1st 2006 until the spring of 2011.


Dr. Walter Weigel will succeed Mr. Karl Heinz Rosenbrock, who has served ETSI as Director General for 15 highly successful years.

Karl Heinz Rosenbrock congratulated all of the candidates. He said;

“The high calibre of applications has allowed the Assembly to elect a first rate candidate.” Speaking about his time as the Director General, he continued; “I am extremely pleased to note that today we are again seeing an increase in the Membership, so that we can continue to move on to great things.”

Dr. Walter Weigel will be the third Director General of ETSI, since the Institute was founded in 1988 to develop Standards previously dealt with by the CEPT (The European Conference of Post and Telecommunications Administrations). He is currently Vice President “Standardization & Regulation”, Siemens Corporate Technology.

During his presentation to the ETSI General Assembly, Dr. Weigel said:

“There is a need to build upon a solid base of success stories by driving the standardization of innovative technologies and building on international partnerships, to secure ETSI’s future role at the heart of the industry.”

With the special award of a lifetime Honorary Director General position, the ETSI General Assembly acknowledged the huge contribution that Mr Rosenbrock has brought to telecommunications throughout his career. His leadership in European, and more recently, worldwide telecoms standards-making has heralded many advances in information and communication technologies, amongst them; the rise of GSM™, 3rd Generation mobile, wireline and wireless broadband, digital television, integrated services and digital networks – all the subject of ETSI standards, and all developed under the guidance of Karl Heinz Rosenbrock.
