WAVELINK ANNOUNCES WIRELESS NETWORK MANAGEMENT IMPLEMENTATION AT SAINT AGNES MEDICAL CENTER
Hospital Uses Wavelink Mobile Manager and Avalanche to Ensure the
Performance, Reliability and Security of its Wireless Network
Kirkland, Wash.-July 14, 2003-Wavelink Corporation, a leading provider of mobile infrastructure management software for the enterprise, today announced that Saint Agnes Medical Center in Fresno, Calif., has deployed Wavelink Mobile Manager and Avalanche to manage its point-of-care wireless network and mobile devices.
Six months after deploying a wireless local area network (WLAN) throughout its 330-bed hospital and adjacent cancer center, Saint Agnes implemented Wavelink's solution to proactively manage and monitor the wireless network. Physicians and nurses rely on the network to administer care by placing lab orders, viewing patient charts and scanning wrist bands to ensure medication is dispensed correctly. On the administrative side, nonclinical staff use wireless devices in the corporate office and the boardroom. The WLAN, which consists of 56 Cisco 1200 access points, is managed by Mobile Manager, a multi-vendor, end-to-end solution for WLAN management, while Avalanche, designed for device management, supports the 75 mobile devices currently running on the network.
Wavelink's centralized management solution simplifies network maintenance, improves efficiency and increases reliability. Mobile Manager and Avalanche enable IT administrators to configure access points remotely, manage security such as Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) encryption keys without physically touching the devices, bring inactive access points back online, push configuration profiles and new software to the handheld devices and more.
"Mobile Manager and Avalanche are integral to the success of our wireless network," said David Horsham, Saint Agnes's senior network manager. "While administrators previously spent a considerable amount of time setting up devices such as access points and wireless PDAs, it now virtually takes only minutes. Wavelink's remote management capabilities also enable the IT department to work directly from our offices, which are a quarter-mile from the hospital, eliminating the redundancy and cost of regularly walking back and forth between the two buildings to perform routine management tasks."
"Saint Agnes's success with Wavelink underscores the importance of being able to actively manage and control wireless networks with the lowest cost and impact to IT," said David Bullis, president and CEO of Wavelink. "From a single management console, network administrators are able to perform all their tasks to ensure the performance and reliability of the WLAN system, improving efficiency and freeing up IT resources for other needs."
Saint Agnes also uses Wavelink's solution to enhance security measures. For example, if a non-approved device attempts to access the network, the intrusion is caught at the local access point by using MAC address control features, and network administrators can look more closely to determine if the attempt was innocent or malicious. With the use of a Radius Server and Wavelink's technology, every user attempting to access the network is required to have an authorized MAC address, a WEP key and an additional password that connects the user's device to an access point and utimately allows him to log on to the network.
