EVERETT, Wash., July 16, 2003 ? Intermec Technologies Corp. today announced MobileLAN?access release 1.90, the latest enhancement to the company?s MobileLAN family of access points. Designed for industrial, small business and large enterprise environments, MobileLAN access points make wireless network installations fast and inexpensive, and allow users to roam securely and reliably anywhere throughout the network.
Release 1.90 features a new, easy-to-use configuration wizard that greatly simplifies access point configuration during initial installation, or when adding or replacing the devices on an existing network. The wizard cuts the installation regimen on a multi-access point system by 90 percent, resulting in significant cost savings for training and setup time.
The new release also features virtual local area network (VLAN) support, which adds a VLAN identifier to all radio traffic, thereby allowing customers to ?partition? the secure network by keeping authenticated users on the corporate IP network and offloading non-secure traffic to the Internet. This feature is especially useful for companies that allow visitors or temporary employees Internet or limited corporate network access.
In addition, Release 1.90 improves upon the company?s Embedded Authentication Server (EAS), an internal RADIUS authentication server provided within Intermec access points. Ideal for small- to mid-size businesses or remote independent sites, EAS now supports up to 60 simultaneous authentications and up to 128 clients.
The new version adds the EAP-PEAP authentication method to the access points? list of security features, which also includes Access Control List by MAC address (ACL/MAC) authentication and 802.1x authentication with either EAP-TTLS or EAP-TLS authentication. The EAS enhancements improve authentication time and free customers from the chore of managing certificates.
?Intermec designs all its wireless networking products to be easy to use, right out of the box,? said Karen Pearson, Intermec principal marketing manager. ?This latest version makes our access points a perfect fit for small- to medium-size businesses with little or no IT staff. Each of the release?s new enhancements speaks directly to the problems that businesses face when installing, managing and securing their wireless networks.?
Other Release 1.90 enhancements include:
?Find this Access Point? ? New command instructs access point lights to blink, allowing users to find specific APs' physical location
Access point configuration checking ? Reduces configuration errors
802.11a wireless enhancements ? Improves upon the most recently approved wireless security standard
Release 1.90 is backward compatible with Intermec?s existing family of access points to ensure customers? investment in wireless technology for years to come. The company?s access points are built with an eye on the future and the wireless industry?s ever-changing standards, ensuring that WLANs can grow and adapt as the company changes.
