Multimedia infrastructure for TeliaSonera Finland?s pilot!

Sheffield, UK and Munich Germany, September 1 2003 /Wi-Fi Technology News/- The first commercial release of the Siemens IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), IMS@vantage was used in a limited user pilot with TeliaSonera Finland. The pilot platform integration was done by the Siemens Information and Communication Mobile Group (Siemens mobile). The pilot platform is based on standards published by the 3G Partnership Project (3GPP) and offers the operators an infrastructure for a wide spread of applications being developed by the companies themselves or their partners.

With IMS@vantage Siemens mobile demonstrates the multimedia platform for packet-oriented access networks such as UMTS, EDGE, GPRS or W-LAN. It enables mobile operators to offer numerous voice, multimedia and data services based on IP (Internet Protocol), SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) and 3GPP Release 5.

One major benefit of IMS is the usage of the widespread Internet Protocol (IP) for data transport. This makes the services offered accessible to a broad user base via all packet-switched radio connections (for example, W-LAN, GPRS and UMTS). In addition, the user can make use of a whole host of interaction and communication options ? from games for the entertainment sector to business applications ? with a single login. These applications will use a variety of basic network services being offered by IMS@vantage, such as session control services (including registration, routing and roaming), secure authentication, flexible charging and payment, quality of service, presence and location, as well as push network services (e.g. Push to Talk service). In the pilot project the tested application was Media Community Application, allowing the users share multimedia with their user groups. The application was developed for Symbian OS/Series 60 platform, and the pilot was carried out with prototypes of Siemens SX1, the first Siemens smartphone based on the platform.

?Our IMS@vantage is a logical step toward an all-IP network,? said Karl-Christoph Caselitz, President of the Networks Division of the Information and Communication Mobile Group, making the significance of the Siemens solution clear?. ?The close co-operation with innovative operators like TeliaSonera Finland in this trend-setting project is an important step toward the commercial use of IMS infrastructure?. Siemens mobile has already successfully integrated mobile network components (multimedia controller, home subscription server, mobile presence manager and application server) and OAM (Operations, Administration, and Maintenance) components in the IMS@vantage system.

?TeliaSonera is researching actively new technologies and their possibilities. The project with Siemens mobile has shown how good co-operation with an innovative vendor accelerates the introduction of new services to the end users?, said Timo Auer, Vice President of TeliaSonera Finland, Technology and Service Development (TSD).

The pilot project ran under Business Lab Finland (BLF) within TeliaSonera Finland. BLF is a forum for developing, building and testing new products, concepts and businesses in a customer oriented manner.

The Siemens Information and Communication Mobile Group (Siemens mobile) offers a complete range of mobile solutions including mobile devices, infrastructure and applications. Devices include mobile phones, wireless modules, mobile organizers and cordless phones as well as products for wireless home networks. The infrastructure portfolio includes GSM, GPRS and 3G mobile network technologies from base stations and switching systems to intelligent networks, e.g. for prepaid services. Mobile Applications cover end-to-end solutions for Messaging, Location Based Services or Mobile Payment. For the fiscal year 2001 (September 30), IC Mobile recorded sales of EUR 11.3 billion and employed 30,730 people worldwide.
