REDMOND, Wash.?Microsoft Corp., a latecomer to the Wi-Fi party, released a new software upgrade to support Wi-Fi Protected Access, a new standards-based wireless network security solution from the Wi-Fi Alliance. The security software will be available for free download for Windows XP users.

WPA is intended to be a replacement for the Wired Equivalent Privacy standard. Microsoft said it will result in a new level of protection for customers taking advantage of the wireless features in Windows XP.

?Many IT managers are hesitant to enable wireless connectivity in their organizations due to security concerns,? said Jawad Khaki, corporate vice president of Windows Networking and Communications Technologies at Microsoft. ?With standards-based Wi-Fi Protected Access, customers can have more confidence their data will be safer and more secure.?

Also on the Wi-Fi front, IBM Corp. discussed much of its wireless plans during its IBM Analyst Symposium in New York. The company said it will focus on offering a broad set of wireless options, including Wi-Fi, Intel Centrino, Cisco Aironet, Bluetooth and cellular WAN, as well as new connection software and additional security products.

?In five years, wireless network connections will become second nature for notebook users,? said Fran O?Sullivan, general manager of IBM?s Personal Computing Division. ?IBM is planning for exponential growth in wireless, and we design ThinkPad notebooks to provide the broadest possible set of wireless choices and options we can offer.?
