Motorola Canopy? Wireless Broadband Portfolio Expands with 2.4GHz Product

SCHAUMBURG, Ill., Feb. 18, 2004 /Wi-Fi Technology News/- Motorola has introduced a 2.4GHz platform for its Canopy? wireless broadband portfolio. The new solution includes cost-effective point-to-point and point-to-multipoint options for Internet service providers, enterprises and private network operators that may be looking to cover larger geographic areas or to extend reach to customers in difficult terrain.

The 2.4GHz system allows network operators to add new subscribers to existing Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) networks and is well-suited for working in challenging topologies, such as areas with foliage. The Canopy system?s ability to provide a robust high-speed connection, even in the presence of interference, enables a network operator to use this solution in areas where other 2.4GHz products already have been deployed.

?Motorola?s 2.4GHz equipment rocks! It is the best equipment that we have seen in this space,? said Dustin Jurman, president of Rapid Systems, a Tampa, Fla-based supplier of Internet systems. www.rapidsys.com ?Motorola?s introduction of 2.4GHz equipment can greatly increase site capacity of existing towers by putting a 2.4GHz ring on the same pole as 5.2GHz and 5.7GHz radios. It also can double backhaul capacity and provide redundancy by running two links next to one another.?

?The Canopy 2.4GHz equipment is great at penetrating objects such as trees, but what we are really impressed with is it?s GPS (global positioning system) synchronization capability. It?s the only product on the market with that feature, and as a result, it makes it a very scalable system in an increasingly crowded band,? said Charles Fortner, chief executive officer of mc.net in Cary, Ill. www.mc.net

The 2.4GHz point-to-point backhaul modules can be used as a cost-effective, low-latency Ethernet bridge between any two networks or between a network and remote user. There is also a 128-bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) model with the most advanced layer of encryption available on wireless broadband networks.

In international markets where other frequencies are limited, the 2.4GHz can complement solutions in other bands, such as the 5.7GHz industrial-scientific-medical (ISM) band or even a licensed band such as 3.5GHz.

?We added a 2.4GHz solution to our portfolio because it will help our customers extend their systems further into areas they can?t reach with our 5GHz solutions. One of the greatest benefits of the 2.4GHz solution is the longer range. Subscribers can now be reached up to 15 miles away, a 50 percent increase in range, without installing additional access point sites, saving hardware and installation labor costs,? said Tom Hulsebosch, senior director of sales and marketing for Motorola?s Canopy system. ?Our 2.4GHz solution is a great way to double site capacity, which again can save operators money.?

?Motorola has made a number of recent announcements regarding the expansion of its Canopy wireless broadband portfolio, including enhancing the performance, security and operational processes of the Canopy system,? said Emmy Johnson, principal analyst for Sky Light Research. www.skylightresearch.com ?Over the last year, wireless DSL has gained significant traction as a technology that meets the needs of the market in terms of affordability and scalability.?

The 2.4GHz backhaul modules are Industry Canada and FCC certified and are offered in three models: a 10 megabit per second (Mbps) data encryption standard (DES) model, a 20 Mbps DES model and a 10 Mbps AES model.
