hi guys i have a d-link wireless router downstairs
and my pc is up stairs at minute i am using
wireless my signal strengh is saying excellent. i
have read in a few places that you get a
better connection with wire resulting in faster
downloads is this true can someone spread some
light on this for me please i have a d-link
airplus dwlg112 wireless router cheers

DJHANDZ, wired is much faster AND more reliable
than wireless. Withe wired network devices there
are Megabit speeds and the better Gigabits
connection
For Megabit connections:
100 Megabit/seconds = 12.5 Mega Bytes/second
This is the maximum transmission speed of Megabit
connections, real world speed averages about 80% of
that with a decent computer. which means 10 mega
bytes/second.
For Gigabits connections:
1000 Megabit/second = 125 Mega Bytes/second
Again, this is the maximum transmission speed of
Gigabit connection, 10 times faster than megabit.
In the real world between 2 FAST computers and
with Gigabit network cards, and gigabit switches/routers
AND Gigabit rated cables, you will get about
anywhere between 30 mega bytes/second to 40 mega
bytes/second, with bursts up to 50 mega
bytes/second.
I have a Gigabit lan in my house and speak
from experience on the real world transmission speed
of gigabit
NOW, any internet connection IS NOT NEARLY as
fast as your home network inside your house. I
live in NYC and have a premium internet
connection. I get about 10 megabits = 1.25 Mega
Bytes/second on a good day. THAT MEANS, I
can only download data from that internet at a
maximum of 1.25 Mega bytes a second. This is
much slower than Megabit and Gigabit.
Now the fasted wireless products out there will
give you 300 mega bits/second, theoretically that is.
Real world that 300 is more like 54
megabits/second, which is still better than your
internet connection.
