I have 2 linksys WAP11's that I am trying to
get to communicate and can't seem to get them to
work together. The first is a version 2.2
WAP11 and the second a brand new version 2.8
WAP11 that will repeat (supposedly). Here's what I
have done and am trying to do. In the
past, I had a WAP11 sitting on a windowsill
beaming across about 100ft to a highgain wireless
antenna on a rooftop next door. This antenna is
connected to a 25 ft low loss antenna cable
that ran down the wall to a PCI card in a
desktop machine. I had an average signal strength
of around 80% and it has worked great for me
for over a year. Now I am trying to hook
up my new access point as a repeater to this
same rooftop antenna so I can have wireless access
in the second building for more than just the
one machine. I have tried everything I can
think of to make this work including 2 calls to
linksys tech support that were of no use to
me. Here are my settings on both access
points....
1st access point that has been working fine:
(v2.2)
IP address: 192.168.0.251
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 0.0.0.0
SSID: linksys
Channel: 6
WEP Manadatory - set with password
AP Mode: Access Point
2nd access point (new version 2.8)
IP address: 192.168.0.249
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 0.0.0.0
SSID: linksys
Channel: 6
WEP Mandatory - same password as other access
point
AP Mode: Repeater with MAC address of first
access point.
Am I doing something wrong? Does anyone know if
there is a problem with ver 2.2 access point
working with the ver 2.8? I am at a loss.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I
have tried hooking the wireless PCI card back up
to the antenna to make sure I have a signal
and it works like a charm.

hi
my friend have you also placed a wep in your
wireless adapter card... also or not..
if not please do that also....
and yeh try one more thing please try to connect
the other access point i mean to say the new
one directly to the computer and select the mode
for it as client mode & place the mac address
of the first access point in it...
hope that works....

I have the same system where a 2.2 acts as an
AP and a 2.8 is set as a repeater.
Netstumbler shows shows the repeater is putting out
a signal but it's mac address is FFFFFFFFFFFF and
my wireless laptop doesn't see it as a usable
wireless connection. The Linksys manual has about
two lines of instructions and is worthless. I
know I am close enough to the source AP because
my laptop will pick it up with only one or
two bars (low signal strength) and I can browse
the internet if a place the laptop in just the
right spot in the house. I can barely
understand the folks at the Linksys support
phone.
Three of the modes of operation will only work
with newer waps...see the setup page on the 2.8.
Maybe the repeater will only work with 2.6 and
2.8 waps. argh.
