Just in case all else fails I thought that having backups would be a good
idea - any pointers towards the right kind of software would be greatly
appreciated. I'd prefer if I could copy my two partitions at different
intervals, if at all possible!

Nothing easier than that: With Norton Save and Restore, not only can you
make backups for different partitions at different intervals, you could go
as far as creating backups of individual folders, too. (at yet another
interval, if you so desire.)
In fact, for each planned backup, you can set an individual schedule. (And
schedule is a lose term here, since the software can also triggers and run
a backup every time you power down your PC, ior install a new software,
etc.)
Really useful if you have one computer with lots iof different data that
has different backup requirements, really.

backed up, disaster recovery?

inspired by the most reliable solutions used by the multinational company
and adapted to the SMB market, here is the link to know more about it
safecoms /sbox/overview.html .
Believe me it is the best and the cheapest i've seen as i used to work for
EMC-Legato.
