Hi everyone, newbie here.
I may be moving to a new residence in January - a cottage I'll be renting.
The owner has a house on the same property - the two buildings are
relatively close, close enough for wireless to work (I think).
The owner already has cable internet at the house. However, there is no
network interface for the cottage - the cable company would have to install
one, and that's just too expensive to be an option. (DSL is not an option
either - too far out in the boonies.)
The owner has graciously offered to share her internet access - however,
she understandably doesn't want to string CAT5 between the buildings! Thus
I am looking for a wireless solution.
The owner already has a wireless router (I do not know what make/model). I
also have wireless router - a Netgear WGR614. I got it to use as a router,
not for the wireless capabilities, and in fact have not used them.
Inside the cottage I would have a wired LAN. What I want to know is, if I
set my Netgear router up to act as a simple access point, gave it an unused
IP on the same IP range that my land-lady's router uses, and plugged that
bad-boy into my Ethernet hub, would my land-lady and I be on the same
network? i.e. assuming her router is configured to allow it, would I be
able to connect to the internet? And if not, can you make any suggestions
that will allow this to work, without necessitating me buying any more
equipment?
If this won't do the trick, my other idea was to connect one PC to the
land-lady's wireless router wirelessly (I do have one wireless adapter) and
set up Internet Connection Sharing service on that box.
I just don't want to shell out for a wireless bridge if the equipment I
have on hand will do the job.
