New to this site, but not to networking.
I need a little help on a problem i have been
having with my wireless network at home.
Firstly, we have DSL via Verizon. Recently my
wireless connection has been dropping about every 1-2
minutes. Strange thing is, is that i get no
error messages and no indication that the connection
has been lost or that there is limited
connectivity. The only way i know that it
dropped is if I'm downloading any file above 2mb
or trying to stream a video it will freeze at
a certain point and stop downloading. It's
frustrating because i have tried everything i know
to solve this problem.
Here are my computer specs, to my knowledge
everything is kosher. this is a very new
computer, built by myself.
Network Controllers:
Belkin54g wireless router-new, DHCP assigned
D-Link WUA-2340 USB wireless adapter
Computer:
Windows XP Pro SP2
Abit IP35 PRO mb
Core 2 Quad extreme processor
Hitachi 320gb 8800 HD
ATI Sapphire HD 2900XT GPU
LG 16x DVD burner
4gigs Crucial RAM
650watt Antec Blue PSU
Last time i checked, usually your hardware
configuration has nothing to do with internet
capabilities as far as receiving files goes, except
for your HD of course, but I am out of ideas
and i refuse to contact Verizon because they
usually have no idea what they are talking
about.
Anyone have any ideas?

Your problem is rather wierd and let me start by
saying I haven't any idea of the cause. Recently
my home network of two desktops and a laptop
started giving problems with respect to transfering
files from one PC to another with error messages
such as no access permission . After hours of
trying everything I could think of I reset the
wireless router back to factory settings (which
included WEP encryption and a supplied key). I
reset all three PCs and found all communications
worked fine. I then introduced my own controls one
at a time, first MAC filtering - still no
problems, then WPA encryption (with a different key
from that previously used) and everything worked
exactly as it should. You never know, it might
work for you!
My desktops are home built but with the most
recent one built in Jan. 2007 I settled for a
core 2 duo with 2gigs of RAM. I do have a
pair of WD 150Gb Raptors in a RAID 0
configuration for good disk performance. Your machine
sounds awesome! |

Have used various USB dongles, beware, they can be
fickle, and get quite hot.
Check the link to your wireless router first to
establish you've a good connection (ping -t), leave
it running for a while. Might be your USB dongle
over heating?????
If you do decide it's the wireless link plumb
for two pieces of kit from the same manufacturer.
Although the WiFi insignia on a piece of equipment
should ensure compatability it does'nt.
