Hi,
I'm trying to use a livebox to connect wirelessly.
Can anyone give me an idiotproof guide of how to achieve this?
It works fine when I've connected via the ethernet cable, but when I try to
connect wirelessly it asks me for the WEP code and won't accept it.
I've tried entering the code in a variety of different ways (1234567890,
1234 5678 90, 1234-5678-90, etc) but it says there is a problem
everytime.
Is there something else I need to do to allow the wireless connection or is
it just Vista being Vista again?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

- Make sure the wireless connection is set to enable in windows wireless
networking (view network connections) if you are not using a cable from the
machine to the router (Livebox), and disable the LAN (Local Area Network)
Connection as you only need the wireless connection from your computer to
the router!
- When Vista or windows picks up the wireless network, example: "wireless
networks detected", enter the WEP / WPA key as it is in upper case (in most
cases) and tick the option of viewing what you are inputting (Vista gives
you that option I think). AND
- Windows will detect not only your wireless network, but next door
neighbours as well, if some of them are also liveboxes, make sure to enter
the WEP Key in yours, otherwise you can't access. In built up areas, your
windows will detect many, and you'll see:
Livebox-0D548
Livebox-0F988
Livebox-0V58
Livebox-0S76
Livebox-0F401
......
Each one with signal strength, the closer ones with more green bars, the
distant with faint signals with one or two bars....Identify yours (written
under the router or click on the orange configure desktop short cut), some
people take it if they see one, that's the one.
- Make sure all is configured right on the configure software, careful
though this is a bit advanced and in all cases that should not be modified
by newbies
- Unplug the livebox for 30 seconds and re-plug it back, often this will
solve the problem
- Repair the connection: hover over the little tiny monitors, right click
and choose repair, 1-2 minutes later, it'll renew the IP addresses and
restores the connection.
- When copying your WEP /WPA key, double check it after writing it on
notepad for example, then highlight, select and paste (safer) in the input
box.
- (This may not apply to you, seen you can connect through cable) Vista
usually self configures Wi-Fi and sets it up like a breeze, the only thing
you need to do is to enter the WPA key, HOWEVER when its the main machine
that connects to the router and sets it up through the software from
orange, make sure you loaded and installed orange livebox from CD, it saves
a lot of hassle.
- Oh, do you have a Wi-Fi card or Wi-Fi radio in the machine you are trying
to connect wirelessly with, maybe a dumb question, but a lot of people
still use machines without Wi-Fi. Also, the Wi-Fi Card can be a problem,
but I'd think it less likely if it's installed OK.
Search here for live-box or livebox, I think there are other pointers

I think the Orange Livebox CD comes with hard wired (LAN) connection
recommended, once you are live and can connect through a cable, disable the
LAN connection, get rid of the cable and enable wireless connection
providing is set up and you can see one in "Network connections", read the
how to in the orange CD. It's possible you may have to do something
else....
You only have to setup the linebox in one machine which is the server that
holds connection information such as usernames, passwords, WPA key....other
machines can connect by inputting the WPA key only. |
