Let's kick-off this WiMax discussion forum now that
the adoption and implementation of the IEEE 802.16
standard has seen more and more uptake by the
industry. We all know Wi-Fi in general and WiMax
in particular must be a good attraction for the
developing world, seen the technology if well planned
has huge advantages, savings as well as positive
social and educational implications. As a developing
country, Pakistan for example currently has the
largest WiMAX wireless network, many East European and
Asian and African countries also have rolled out
some impressive networks and wi-fi hotspots are
everywhere.
Wireless Broadband based on WiMAX is the way to
go and it's only a matter of time Wi-Fi and
WiMAX are even more fused to serve each other in
more ways than ever before. Mobile phones are
based on the GSM standard, a different access
standard with their own alphabet soup such as 3G,
4G etc, one can see the three technologies all
fused together. Internet access through WiMAX based
wireless broadband, users connected to their own or
other networks through hotspots or access points or
indeed their own computer using Wi-Fi, and mobile
phones accessing both somehow. There will I think
be more technology convergence for that to be more
widespread. WiMAX is for long range, in many
miles or kilometres, Wi-Fi is rather in yards or
metres, though in some situation, Wi-Fi signals can
reach miles with some antennas.
Having said that, Wi-Fi and WiMAX will in time I
think be as advantageous in the developed world
