we have a Linksys WRT54G access point connected to a ADSL modem through a
1Gb Dell switch; the internet connection contract allows speeds up to
6Mbit; we run some tests accessing speedtest.net from a laptop while no
other user is connected:
- when connected directly to the switch we measure about 4.7Mbps
- when connecting the laptop to the access point (G mode/54bps) we never
get anything better than 1.7Mbps
we run several times the tests above using 11 different access points and
different switches all connected with the same network measuring always the
same two speeds.
is there any known reason for such a performance degrade?
thanks

Not unless you're on the fringe of your AP's range (how many bars/reported
sig strength)?, you have other AP(s) close by using the same channle
(change channle), your laptop aerials goosed (try a different laptop)? Look
for info on devices which my be generating interference (microwaves,
intruder alarms, etc).
Use "ping (AP's static IP) -t" to see if you are loosing packets there.
