My inlaws live in a park that has satelite (Hughes) internet. The park receives the internet and is going to let those that live there use it for free. They have a router at the satelite but the signal reaches a very few people. They were told to strategically place routers through the park to boost the signal to everyone else. My inlaws have a wireless card and if they are sitting near the current router it will work but not at their house. Will this idea of using routers to boost or extend the signal work?

There are several ways to distribute a free wireless broadband signal.
From simply leaving your home wireless router's connection open or unsecured.
Too comercial builds costing many hundreds of pounds, and monthly maintance charges.

I think you're talking about adding wireless repeaters to extend the wireless coverage of your gateway device? You may find 1 or 2 would work ok, but anymore would probably reduce your signal to dial-up speed.

Without any further info - and trying not to be technical - an externally mounted Omni directional aerial at your source point will send a signal via Line Of Sight (no obstructions) to another externally mounted aerial over great distance's.
A stock 2db Omni found on most wireless devices, mounted internally will not.

Sorry for being brief, but much more info needed. Coverage area, no of people wanting to connect.

The park that they are living in gets the satelite internet and is willing to allow anyone that can connect (and lives there) to use the internet. There are probably 20 - 25 mobile homes that could want service. Feel free to get technical - I'll have to go down and try to figure this out.

If they got an Omni-directional aerial - wuold that be able to get teh signal further? My in-laws are probably 1000ft away and there are obstructions between them and where the signal is originating. Is there something that they could put half way - higher up - above the mobile homes that would be a better line of sight for the homes at that end of the neighborhood?

Thanks

If LOS is unavailable then some form of mid-point repeater will be needed. Omni's are only needed if you want 360 coverage. If your source is central - then use an Omni here, and use a directional aerial at the client end.
The higher the gain of an aerial the narrower the beam. So yes a high gain Omni will cover a larger circle, however coverage in the vertical plain will be reduced. Think of 2 soup bowls face to face for a low gain omni, and 2 dinner plates face to face for a high gain omni.

I'm not "coping out" but this explains things far better than I ever could .

Post back if you need help with anything in the articles.

I would suggest trying out a long-range WiFi adapter to help your in laws get a stronger WiFi signal from greater distances.

I use the Wi-Fire by hField Technologies to access my wireless network when I have a slow connection of want to do some work outside. I really the notice the difference. I can't believe I suffered with a slow, painful internet connection for so long!

They're website is hfield . Definitely check it out and give it a try!
