I have a router downstairs that is wirelessly linked to my computer upstairs (on the other side of the house) and I occassionally get a peak in download performance of 255kb/s (ish); but most of the time, it only performs at about 20-50kb/s.

I have tested the signal/noise ratio and it is -100dBm, which I am told is fine, and the reported speed is maxed out (54Mbps). Also the signal strength is shown to be 'Very Good'.

I do not have any malware or viruses on my computer, I can assure you, as I have recently formatted my computer and reinstalled windows, all programs etc. to start fresh after a spate of random problems. I might add that this issue was also present before I formatted my computer.

So, does anyone know why the speed will intermittantly change from high to low?

Thanks

- Ollie.

Dunno where you're getting your figures from?
Stick to stuff you know, use a popular speedtest site such as plusnet's to Build up a log of connection speeds throughout the day, or whenever you appear to be running slow.
Try the command "ping netgear.com -t" using your command promt. The actual times don't matter that much. Leave it running for a minute or two then hit Ctrl - c to stop it. You'll get an idea of how many Packets have been lost or timed out. Obviously the lower the better. Ideally 0%.

I would sugest your cross property/different floor wireless connection is probably the reason. Have you other local AP(s) using the same channle causing interference? Is your connection secure? Are there other users off the same router? Tried moving the devices at both ends - usually higher or away from obstructions?

Do the simple stuff first bugmenot (love it, by the way - my mail is al-av-a-go).
