I have recently purchased the items below in an
experiment to see if I could receive a Wi-Fi
signal in my 2nd story apartment. I did
pick up a couple of strong signals. The icon
monitors in the system tray show that I’m
connected. Also the icon antenna shows excellent
signal strength and 54Mbps. However, I am not
connected to the Internet with a small red cross
showing over the antenna icon. I right clicked
on the tray monitors and clicked “diagnose and
repair”. The response was to plug a cable into
the network adaptor “Local Area connection”. I
have no clue about what adaptor they are talking
about. The only adapter I have is the HWUN3
Hi-Gain USB Wireless-N Adapter that came with a CD
installation. I have it plugged into the
USB port and with a cable going to the hi
gain antenna near my window. I have no router,
and no wireless modem. My current access to
Internet is a slow 56kb modem connection.

You may just need to enter the needed password /
network key to access the network and the
internet. It all depends on what operating system
you are using, search the forums here for windows
98 which will bring older set up and
troubleshooting problems even if you are using Windows
XP / Vista or Windows 7, win 98 users mostly
are still likely still using 56k modems and may
experience similar problems.
Right click on the tray and find which connection
has a good signal, make sure it's yours at home
/ office and not next door's and enter the
required authentication key and press connect.
It may have to do with Internet connection sharing,
the computer which houses the Internet connection
needs to allow sharing the connection, plenty of
tips here if you search for Internet Connection
Sharing etc.
