I live in a rural location and recently got lincsat 2-way satellite
internet...same as direcway. So I want to share it with my neighbor accross
the street. So I got a d-link DI-714+ 2.4ghz wireless router. I have a
DWL-650+ in my laptop and works great anywhere around my house. I also have
a couple of pci d-link adapters as well and that works great around the
housel. So I bought two SMC directional anntennas (about 3-5 dbi) and hooked
it up to my router and pointed it through the window to the house accross
the street. And the other antenna in the window accross the street and just
had a portable computer sitting there with a PCI dlink adapter and was
working pretty well except when the odd truck would go by it would lose the
signal. But the signal was there and the broadbang was just as fast as the
server. But the computer that I want connected is in the basement across the
street and you guessed it ....there is no signal down there.
SO....then I bought a 13dbi 180 degree superpass antenna and attached to
the outside of my house. And also bought a dlink range extender dwl-800 and
set in repeater mode and put it in the upstairs window across the street. So
now I had about 80-90% link quality and 70-80% signal strength in the
basement...woo-hoo. Ok I had trouble resolving web pages and the connection
was slow. The signal seemed to fade in and out and after a alot of hours
playing around and moving the repeater around decided this wasnt working. I
tried a few different channels with no success. I can actually connect to
the repeater across the street from my house and actually seems to work
better over here for some reason??? I dont know why ?? I was thinking there
was something interefereing at the house across the street but there is no
2.4ghz devices or x-10 devices over there unless the neighbors have some???
There is a wireless internet provider about 9km away? And also a radio tower
about 1km away?? Just more info for you pros. I dont think this is
affecting as Im sure the are a different frequency.
SO......since It worked not bad just connecting directly to the router
with the two antenna's with direct line of sight I have ordered a dlink
wireless bridge dwl-810 and plan on hooking up a directional antenna to it
and just running cat5 ethernet cable directly to the PC in the basement and
hopefully this will work out ok...but I was hoping to create a wireless
environment at the house accross the street as they have a laptop over there
as well. But not a big deal as long as I get the broadband connection down
in the basement in the house accross the street.
SO...there is my story and I am looking for some professional advice on
how this should be setup? Please I need some advice at this point. I have
heard of people sending signals farther than this but I guess the hardware
they where using is quite a bit better and expensive...but I feel I should
be able to send it across the street. I will soon find out how it works out
with the wireless bridge. Do I need to boost the signal from the
router...although I seem to have decent signal and link quality or do I
...It just seems intermittent and too much packet loss at times????

Please Help
