I am looking to get a laptop, but all this wireless technology confuses me. I want to use it for internet surfing when away from home and no connection is available. How does this work? How much does it cost? What kind of equipment do I need, etc. Please give me all the details as I don't understand any of this stuff, but would like to learn. Thanks so much for your help.

You need to check out the nearest wi-fi hotspots near you (wi-fi hotspots directory as an example), then see if one of the wi-fi providers like Boingo or Trustive to subscribe to, usually by the hour or monthly etc..
They provide free software for you to connect with in addition to providing you with access details (login password etc..).
Once you are subscribed, you can connect with your laptop anywhere you go worldwide (mostly).
It is just like a mobile phone in your pocket with pay as you go or on contract, wi-fi access subscription is the same with laptops, PDAs and even wi-fi phones now.
Good luck.

More information should be available on the wi-fi provider's web site. You can always subscribe for one or two hours and test it out. ($5.00 - 10,00 / hour on average)

I got a laptop which is wi-fi enabled and I didnt buy anything for addition. I connect wirelessly without having to sign up for any services nor pay for anything, I do have few choices which network within range I would like to connect. I also leave next to a hotel where I can connect to their wireless network. I guess I am getting the free access.
