My grandmother lives approxiately 600 feet from my mothers house.. they
both live on the same plot of land, and gramma wants internet access.. i
weened her off of AOL and now she wants wi fi.. my mother runs satellite
internet and runs quite fast actually... my question is if i buy the WAP11
from linksys (wich i read in one article that it extends to over 1600 feet)
and a wifi card, will gramma be able to recieve a signal from 600 ft away..
there would only be a wall or two between the connection, (the one in moms
office and the one in grammas room).. would it extend all that way or would
i need a repeater.. or would you suggest any other equipment that will do
the job..
If you play your cards right, I would imagine possible. Some people have
a reasonably good signal from over 1 mile. It all depends on the hardware,
obstructions and obstacles, wi-fi signal and range extenders etc...
With good wi-fi routers / gateways linking your mom's and grandma's house,
placing the router / gateway halfway (seen both are in the same land),
they'll have only 300ft for both signals from the base station.
Have a look at our store ( www.wi-fitechnology.com/Wi-Fi-Store+main.html
) for reviews on wi-fi hardware, a lot of people who bought hardware will
have a story, one or two may have a similar story, at least you'll know
what's worked for them so you can buy it there or somewhere else if you
find cheaper.
We have members with ad-hoc connections extending up to 100ft with good
signal, 600ft however, needs a strong infrastructure connection with
802.11g hardware, possibly a linksys range extender or similar, and another
gadget as a signal improver. My advice would be to wait few days and see if
someone built a similar infrastructure and successfully gained
good-to-excellent signal so you can emulate their config as well as
hardware....
